How Wastegate Controls Work

Wastegate Controls

Wastegate controls are important features that regulate boost in the turbocharger by limiting the exhaust fumes that pass through it. Since too much boost could result in a blown engine, these components are vital safety mechanisms. An external wastegate control is made of 3 basic parts:

Inlet/Outlet Ports

Valve

Pressure Actuator

Essentially, boost pressure will act on the pressure actuator to open or close it. As the boost pressure builds, the wastegate will begin to open, which serves to bypass exhaust gases and maintain the boost pressure at a set level.

Factory turbo systems typically include wastegate controls already. But you may need to purchase and install one separately if you are fitting an aftermarket product, working on a large-frame turbocharger without an internal wastegate system, or you want better control of boost or engine power output. Aftermarket systems may feature larger ports and actuator diaphragms.

At DieselSite, Inc, we carry a complete line of performance parts. When you are looking for wastegate controls, our company’s inventory may include just what you need. Our online store is your convenient source for high-quality engine parts, accessories, and more to keep your diesel vehicle in optimal condition.
